About Courage Under Fire
24 has had a long line of minor character allies for the bigwig heroes of 24,
but there are none we will remember for their guts, smarts and committment to
the truth so much as Yusuf Auda, the initially suspicious foreign intelligence
agent who turned out to be an unlikely hero who gave his life to protect crucial
evidence and save his country from decimation at the hands of the American military
machine. Yusuf exemplifies the concept that when it comes to protecting the integrity
of justice, ethnicity, origin, colour and race are moot -- it lies in the heart
of the man himself.

A Brief History of Yusuf Auda
Yusuf enters the story during the second act of season two. As a result of an
intelligence sharing agreement struck between the US and Yusuf's country, CTU
agreed to include Yusuf in their investigation of who is responsible for the
nuclear threat. He arrives at CTU with the contents of Syed Ali's safehouse.
Ali is the leader of the terrorist cell responsible for the nuke. Tony Almeida
is immediately suspcious of Yusuf and is unwilling to trust him with any sensitive
intel, which creates tension between them, particularly after CTU analyzes a
hard drive recovered from the safehouse which seemingly implicates Yusuf's country
in supporting the terrorists and conspiring to detonate the nuke.
After interrogating Syed Ali, Michelle Dessler suspects that the recording on
the hard drive which implicates Yusuf's country is a forgery, however no one
believes they should pursue this thread, even Tony. Michelle confides in Jack
and after talking to Ali, Jack agrees with her. Unfortunately, Ali is assassinated
before he can give them any more information. Michelle suggests that Jack talk
to Yusuf, as he may have more information. However Yusuf is still angry at being
exluded from the investigation by Tony and doesn't want to co-operate with Jack.
Before Jack can gain Yusuf's trust, he receives a phone call from Jonathan Wallace,
a US military defector who claims to have planted the evidence implicating Yusuf's
country in Ali's safehouse. He says that he'll give Jack the evidence in exchange
for bringing Kate Warner, a material witness, to a warehouse in Studio City.
Yusuf notices Jack taking Kate out of CTU against agency authority, and decides
to follow him on a hunch. Jack spots him and corners him, and Yusuf astutely
points out that Jack will need his help to protect Kate. At this point, Jack
and Yusuf join forces.
Yusuf successfully protects Kate from Jonathan Wallace's secret accomplice, and
joins Jack and Wallace in the warehouse. Wallace demands that Jack and Yusuf
surrender Kate to his custody if they want the evidence. Jack and Yusuf plant
a tracker on Kate and let Wallace take her, but before Wallace can leave, snipers
begin shooting at them from the rooftops in the alley. Wallace is forced to join
forces with Jack and Yusuf to escape from the warehouse. Yusuf, Jack and Wallace
are all highly trained operatives and manage to lay out 11 hostiles in a massive
firefight, however Wallace does not escape unscathed. He takes a bullet in the
neck and is seriously injured. Jack and Yusuf have no choice but to take Wallace
to an urgent care clinic nearby to attempt removal of the bullet. Wallace dies
on the table, but after examing Wallace's X-Rays, Jack realizes that Wallace
surgically implanted the microchip with the evidence exonerating Yusuf's country
in his abdomen. Jack and Yusuf extract the chip and realize that there is a tracker
attached to it, which is how the hostiles found Wallace at the warehouse.
As Yusuf attempts to remove the tracker, the men trying to kill Wallace arrive
at the clinic. Yusuf manages to remove the tracker, and he and Jack formulate
a plan: Yusuf and Kate will take the chip and Jack will try to divert the assassins
by taking the tracker separately. Yusuf and Kate manage to escape from the clinic,
but Jack isn't so lucky. He is captured and tortured by the men who want the
chip back.
As Yusuf and Kate wait at the agreed meeting place for Jack, Kate worries about
the fact that Jack is late. Yusuf says their priority is to get the chip back
to CTU. They are about to leave when they are ambushed by a group of irate racist
rednecks who are out on a rampage against Middle Easterners to avenge the detonation
of the nuke. He is dragged from the car and though he manages to fend off two
of his attackers, a third sneaks up behind him and brains him with a brick. The
three rednecks beat Yusuf within an inch of his life and steal the chip. Kate
offers to exchange money for the chip at her house. The rednecks but her in the
SUV and drive away, leaving Yusuf bleeding on the ground.
Yusuf manages to crawl to a phone booth with his last ounce of energy, but he
can't call for help with the phone lines down because of the nuclear detonation.
He crumples to the floor in frustration.
Meanwhile, Jack has escaped from his torturers and now knows the name of
the man behind the bomb. He rushes to the meeting place to find Kate and
the car
gone, and Yusuf half-dead. Yusuf manages to cling to life long enough to tell
Jack where the men have taken Kate and the chip with his last breath. As his
life slips away, all he can say is "Go get the chip, Jack. Go get the
chip."
Yusuf's death was a tragedy, and his is the epitome of a man who had justice
and truth at his heart even in his last breath. Alas, Yusuf. You will not be
forgotten.
