Tony learns, along with everyone else at CTU LA, that there has been an assassination threat made against Presidential Candidate David Palmer. CTU is charged with finding the people responsible and stopping them. CTU receives a visit from District Director George Mason. Despite his reluctance, Tony assists Jack in some unorthodox investigation methods at Nina’s request.
Golden Almeida Quote
“Oh. And he’s Mr. Clean, huh?”
Episode 2: 1AM-2AM
Tony, suspicious of what transpired between Jack, Nina and Mason, and displeased that he’s being shut out, presses Nina for answers. When she doesn’t give them, Tony makes a move to find out what she and Jack are up to on his own.
Golden Almeida Quote
“You can boss me around all you want here. But when you and I punch out, we’re something else. OK?”
Episode 3: 2AM-3AM
After learning of Walsh’s death, Tony can’t help but think Jack may have been involved, especially when he notices blood on Jack’s hand. His suspicions grow when he witnesses a confrontation between Jack and Nina. He calls his superiors and suggests that Jack be relieved of his command.
Golden Almeida Quote
“This is Tony Almeida at CTU. Look, you better get down here right away. Jack Bauer needs to be relieved of his command.”
Episode 4: 3AM-4AM
Tony shares with Jack that he’s discovered an empty seat on the plane that exploded two hours before. Mason returns to call in a lockdown based on Tony’s earlier assertions that Jack is no longer fit to run CTU. Jack manages to slip out, but nonetheless, Nina is upset with Tony for what she feels is extreme disloyalty.
Golden Almeida Quote
“You don’t trust me but you trust Jack? Come on, Nina. He’s been lying. He’s been hiding things from us. That may be okay for you, but it’s not okay for me.”
Episode 5: 4AM-5AM
Tony remains skeptical of Jack’s actions and Nina’s motives for standing by him. Despite this, he tries as best he can to make peace with her.
Golden Almeida Moment
As Nina’s online access is still denied, she must ask Tony to find the CTU police liaison’s contact number for Jack. Tony questions his girlfriend’s loyalty, but complies with her request nonetheless, desiring to get out of the doghouse.
Episode 6: 5AM-6AM
Tony discovers that Jack requisitioned a CTU chopper but didn’t report his intended destination. He rushes outside, moments after Jack has already lifted off. He confronts Nina, who flatly refuses to give him any answers and tells him to stop following her.
Golden Almeida Dialogue
Nina: Stop following me, Tony!
Tony: I prefer to think of it as watching your back.
Episode 7: 6AM-7AM
When Jack and Nina exit CTU abruptly, claiming they’ve been called away to a meeting at Division, Tony suspects all is not what it appears to be. He persuades Jamey to send him the footage from video surveillance so he can review what transpired in Jack’s office before he and Nina left. What he discovers leaves him more than a little unsettled.
Golden Almeida Quote
“Jack, you sonofabitch. [pause] Why’d he give her a flak jacket?”
Episode 8: 7AM-8AM
Nina finally calls in and reveals shocking news: Jack’s family is being held hostage and their captor forced him to take Nina out of CTU at gunpoint by threatening to kill them. When Tony catches Jamey in a lie about Nina, Nina realizes that Jamey is a mole working for the people who want Palmer dead. Tony brings Nina back to CTU and they hatch a plot to catch Jamey and interrogate her.
Golden Almeida Quote
“Look. If somebody doesn’t tell me what’s going on right now, I’m going straight to Chappelle.”
Episode 9: 8AM-9AM
Tony and Nina interrogate Jamey using every tactic they can think of. She is willing to give up the name “Gaines,” but refuses to say anything else unless she is granted a written immunity agreement. Jack suggests that Tony and Nina use Jamey’s son as leverage against her. When Jamey finds out, she requests time alone to think about things. When Nina and Tony return, they discover Jamey slumped over, blood pouring out of her cut wrist onto the floor.
Golden Almeida Dialogue
Tony: How could you do this? Betray your country, be responsible for the deaths of people you work with?
Jamey: I told you, I didn’t know any of that was going to happen.
Tony: Oh, that’s right. You’re just tappin’ on your keyboard, right?
Episode 10: 9AM-10AM
When Jamey dies on the operating table, Tony agrees to help Nina cover for Jack and help him find his family. They receive a call from Jack’s wife, but the call ends before they can trace the location. Fate throws a wrench into their plans when an old colleague of Nina’s takes over CTU.
Golden Almeida Moment
Tony watches Nina as she listens to Jack telling Teri and Kim how much he loves them and that he will anything to rescue them. Tony can clearly see the emotion Nina feels for Jack, and has to hold his own uneasiness in check.
Episode 11: 10AM-11AM
Alberta Green wastes no time in making sure everyone knows she’s now in charge of CTU. She is immediately suspicious that Nina is breaking protocol to help Jack based on her knowledge of their past relationship. Nina insists that Tony is under no obligation to continue helping her cover for Jack under Green’s intense scrutiny, but Tony makes it clear he does not intend to abandon her.
Golden Almeida Dialogue
Nina: Tony, I appreciate you looking the other way on this, but don’t feel like you’ve gotta help me cover for Jack anymore.
Tony: I’m not doing this for Jack.
Episode 12: 11AM-12PM
Now convinced that Tony and Nina are concealing Jack’s whereabouts from CTU, Alberta Green gets serious with some tough interrogation tactics, putting them both on suspension and threatening their jobs. Just as Tony is on the brink of confessing to save himself, Jack calls in with his location and Tony is off the hook.
Golden Almeida Moment
Tony remains stone-faced and tight-lipped as he weighs risking the lives of Jack’s family versus risking the rest of his career.
Episode 13: 12PM-1PM
When Nina worries about Jack’s status in the field, Tony assures her that Jack is capable of taking care of himself. Together, they question Jamey Farrell’s mother and discover a connection between deposits made to her account on Jamey’s behalf from a bank in Belgrade and a second assassin who could already be in Los Angeles.
Golden Almeida Dialogue
Nina: Look, I’m sorry. Since this whole thing started I guess I’ve been a little harsh.
Tony: A little?
Episode 14: 1PM-2PM
Jack returns to CTU with his family safe and sound, but when Ryan Chappelle from Division arrives, it becomes clear to everyone that the higher-ups want Bauer’s head on a platter. Green and Chappelle try to recruit Tony to their side by promising him a promotion if he sells Jack out, but Tony refuses to condemn Jack for what he did.
Golden Almeida Quote
“Let me save you some time, Mr. Chappelle. I’m not the biggest fan of Jack Bauer. I don’t agree with the way he delegates authority, and I don’t like the way he runs operations. But since midnight last night, you won’t get me to disapprove of a single action he’s taken.”
Episode 15: 2PM-3PM
CTU is in a tailspin when Senator Palmer shows up to interrogate Jack himself. Tony and Jack share a moment of cameraderie when Tony updates Jack on Teri and Kim’s status at the CTU safehouse.
Golden Almeida Moment
Tony gives Jack a friendly and supportive pat on the back as he updates him on Teri and Kim, and tells him that Chappelle is waiting to speak with him in the conference room.
Episode 16: 3PM-4PM
Alas, Tony does not appear in this episode.
Episode 17: 4PM-5PM
When he receives a frantic phonecall from Kim Bauer, Tony learns that the CTU safehouse was attacked and that Teri Bauer is missing. Kim refuses to give her location to Tony, worried that CTU can no longer be trusted. Tony informs Mason, who has been sent by Chappelle to keep an eye on Jack, but Mason orders Tony to keep what he knows to himself. Tony goes along, but doesn’t feel right about it.
Golden Almeida Moment
Tony tries hard to convince George Mason to inform Jack about the ambush at the safehouse. George orders Tony not to distract Jack from the Alexis Drazen sting op, and despite his best intentions, Tony realizes that he can’t directly go against Mason’s order … at least not yet.
Episode 18: 5PM-6PM
When Jack calls in and inquires about his family, Tony complies with Mason’s orders and keeps him in the dark about the attack at the safehouse, but he’s far from happy about it. Tony pressures Mason to be honest with Jack, and Mason responds with some rather unpleasant views of his own.
Golden Almeida Dialogue
Mason: Hey! Almeida. I’m on your side. Nina oughta be here right now, what does Jack need her for? You’re busting your ass without any resources because she felt like taking a ride with him. If that works for you, great…
Tony: You know what works for me? You keeping out of my personal business, that works for me!
Episode 19: 6PM-7PM
Nina returns from the field and is furious to discover that she was not notified of the attack at the safehouse. When the agent sent to look for Teri at the Bauer residence doesn’t answer his cell, Tony actually leaves CTU premises to check things out himself. He arrives just in time to save Teri from certain death at the hands of a Drazen assassin.
Golden Almeida Moment
In one of his top three most godlike moments of the first season, Tony arrives at the Bauer house just in the nick of time to kill the assassin who is about to murder Teri. This moment is particularly sweet as it is the first and only time during the entire season that Tony gets to leave CTU and get out in the field for some action!
Episode 20: 7PM-8PM
After assuring a distraught Teri Bauer that Kim is alive and well, Tony rushes Teri and her friend Phil Parslow, who has been shot, away from the Bauer house to a CTU medical clinic. Along the way he calls Nina and informs her of his situation, alerting her that the assassins are still after the Bauer women.
Golden Almeida Dialogue
Teri: (hysterical) What do you mean you don’t know where she is?
Tony: After the safehouse, she didn’t trust us and I don’t blame her. Get in!
Teri: We have to find her, Tony! We have to find her!
Tony: Believe me, we’re looking. Teri, GET IN THE CAR!
Episode 21: 8PM-9PM
Tony returns to CTU with Teri in tow, only to discover that Jack is now involved in a do-or-die firefight with Victor Drazen’s mercenaries. The madness never ends!
Golden Almeida Moment
Tony finds out that Kim is at the police station and tells Teri they found her. This moment is not particularly godlike within itself, except for the delicious way Tony delivers the news.
Episode 22: 9PM-10PM
A colleague informs Tony that Kim Bauer has been captured by hostiles, which upsets him greatly. He feels it would be easier on Teri if Nina delivers the bad news. When Nina finds it too difficult, she expresses doubts about whether she has what it takes to continue with the job. Tony reassures her that she’s the best agent they have.
Golden Almeida Dialogue
Nina: I just feel like I’m not doing my job.
Tony: There’s nothing wrong with the way you’re doing your job, okay? Ultimately, we’re here to try to help people, right? I don’t know anyone who does that better than you.
Episode 23: 10PM-11PM
When he finds evidence that points to Mason as working for the Drazens, Tony confides in Nina and they try to formulate a plan to take Mason out of play. But all that is pushed aside when the media reports David Palmer’s death. The plot thickens when Mason informs Tony and Nina that Palmer’s death was staged to protect Kim Bauer.
Golden Almeida Moment
Tony discovers that floorplans to the secret detention facility where the Drazens captured Jack have been recently accessed by George Mason (which we later discover was ostensibly planted by Nina to cover her ass). He has seemingly discovered the mole (little does he know). He shuts down Mason’s network access.
Episode 24: 11PM-12AM
Tony is stunned to discover that Jack is the last man standing after a hardcore firefight with the Drazens and their men. When Nina reveals herself as the mole who betrayed Jack and CTU, Tony helps Mason convince Jack not to kill her. He is utterly disgusted as his lover is led away in handcuffs after a dismissive half-glance in his direction.
Golden Almeida Moment
Tony watches as Nina is led away in handcuffs, and the look on his face as he tries to comprehend everything says it all: his illusions have been shattered as he realizes everything he believed about the woman he loved was a lie.
