About Remain ...
Kim Bauer has had several love interests during the course of 3 seasons of 24, but there is none quite so compelling as her short-lived yet intensely beautiful relationship with Rick, her kidnapper turned rescuer in the first season. This relationship captures the perfect innocence and naive dedication that can develop between two young people in over their heads, caught in a dangerous situation, with only their instincts and each other to help them survive. This fanlisting is designed to unite people from around the web who are fans of the Kim/Rick relationship.

The name of this fanlisting, "Remain...", comes from the title of the amazing John Frusciante song playing in the background when Rick and Kim kiss at Rick's house in Ecco Park during s1 5-6pm. "Remain" is the 6th track on the incredible John Frusciante album "To Record Only Water For Ten Days."

The History of Kim and Rick ...
Kim and Rick first meet on a double-date set up by Kim's best friend Janet York, who is dating Rick's friend Dan. Unbeknownst to the girls, this date was the insidious pretext for a plan to kidnap Kim Bauer. Dan was working for Ira Gaines, who masterminded the plan to frame Kim's father Jack, a CTU agent, for the assassination of Senator David Palmer. Gaines wanted to capture Kim so that he could make Jack do his bidding by threatening to kill her if he didn't obey. Gaines hired Dan to befriend Janet and arrange for her to bring Kim to a double date, so that he and Rick could deliver Kim to Gaines in exchange for $20,000.

Initially, Rick goes along with what Dan wants, because he is still in the dark as to exactly how much danger they are putting her Kim in or how far Dan is willing to go for the money. The true stakes begin to dawn on him when Dan breaks Janet's arm. For the first time, Rick stands up to Dan when he administers a shot of heroin to Janet to kill the pain of her broken arm.

Shortly after Janet regains consciousness following her heroin shot, Kim and Janet manage to get away from the guys and escape into a maze of crumbling buildings and homeless male prostitutes. Kim and Janet manage to steal a cell phone from a shady looking guy on the street and call Kim's mother, but in the ensuing chase, Janet is the victim of a hit-and-run, and Kim is recaptured by the guys. Dan and Rick fight about whether or not to go back and check on Janet. Finally, Dan decides that they need to make sure Janet is dead. Kim gets extremely violent and Dan orders Rick to tie her up and gag her with duct tape. Dan drives back to the scene of the accident with the intention of shooting Janet and Rick appears just as afraid of Dan as Kim is in this moment, as he tries, right up until the last second to convince Dan not to do it. An ambulence arrives just before Dan can shoot Janet, and the van with Kim in it races away.

Rick and Dan meet Gaines in a deserted parking lot. Gaines asks them where Janet is. Dan tells them she's dead. Gaines orders them to meet him at his compound to pick up their money and puts Kim in the backseat of his car. On the drive, Rick shows signs of remorse, worrying that Kim will get hurt. Dan tells Rick Kim could very well already be dead, and that he should forget Kim and concentrate on the money.

When they arrive at the compound, Gaines has discovered that Janet is still alive. Dan's punishment for lying to Gaines and screwing up the job is a bullet in the head. Rick starts to realize what he's gotten himself into, and exactly who he's dealing with. Gaines orders Rick to bury Dan's body and goes back inside, leaving Rick to watch Kim.

Despite Rick's assertions that he doesn't need her help, Kim grabs a shovel and starts helping Rick dig a hole to bury Dan. Rick sits down and lights a joint. Having seen that Rick was underinformed and overpowered by Dan during the kidnapping, and knowing how shocked and scared Rick was after he saw his best friend get shot, Kim sees Rick as her only chance to escape from Gaines. She begins working on him, trying to convince him that if he doesn't help her escape, he will end up dead just like Dan. As Rick looks over at the lifeless body of his friend, he tosses away the rest of the joint and continues helping Kim dig. This is the beginning of Kim/Rick bond.

At first, Rick is hesitant to work out any real escape plan, because he believes that after Dan is buried, Gaines will let him go and he can call the cops. However, after Gaines confirms Kim's suspicions that Gaines never intended to let Rick walk away, he agrees to try and make a run for it. They work out a plan to bolt their way through an area of the compound that isn't well-guarded, dig their way under the wire fence and run to the highway. Since Rick is supposed to be guarding Kim, he is in a position to let her out of the shed she is locked in without drawing attention. Their plan almost works and they are about to duck under the fence and run to safety when Kim sees that her mother is being dragged from a car by 3 men, wearing a black hood over her head. Fearing for her mother's safety if Gaines discovers she and Rick have escaped, Kim turns back. She tells Rick to go on without her, but before he can decide, he sees a guard coming through the trees and they are forced to return to the shed or risk Gaines finding out that Rick is actually trying to help Kim.

For the next several hours, Rick tries to help Teri and Kim as much as he can. Teri manages to steal a cell phone from one of the other men guarding them so she can call CTU. When Eli, the owner of the stolen phone, comes back angrily looking for it and threatening violence, Kim trusts Rick enough to motion to where the phone is hidden with her eyes. When Eli asks Rick if he's seen the phone, he says no. From that point on, both of women are certain that he can be trusted. When the phone begins beeping because of a dying battery, Eli finds the phone, but Rick convinces him not to tell Gaines that the women called for help, saying that Gaines will blame Eli, since they used his phone.

Very soon after, Rick hears Gaines' boss, Andre Drazen, tell Gaines that if Jack Bauer doesn't turn up at the compound within the next half hour, Gaines is to kill Teri and Kim and pack up his operation. Rick knows he can't stop Gaines from killing them, so instead he gives them the loaded gun that Dan left in his van. Although the gun jams when Teri tries to use it on Eli, who was sent to kill them, he was caught off guard, which allowed Kim to knock his gun out of his hand and distract him so her mother could grab his gun and shoot him. Teri and Kim hide the body and prepare to make a run for it, when Jack arrives just in the nick of time.

Meanwhile, Rick is helping to load up equipment and weapons into vans, preparing to leave the compound. Gaines asks him to go and check on Eli, who still has not returned from the guest house where he was supposed to kill the women. Rick knows that Eli must be dead, so he stalls as long as he can before Gaines finally sends him down to the guesthouse a second time.

Rick returns to the guest house to find himself being attacked by an unknown man who practically chokes the life out of him. This man is Jack Bauer, Kim's father, who has finally managed to locate his wife and daughter and is preparing for their escape. Kim and Teri convince Jack not to hurt Rick, saying they trust him and that he's been helping them stay alive. Jack finally relents. He says he has to leave to bring a car, but Rick says he has a better plan. He can steal one of Gaines' vans so they can all drive directly out of the compound together.

Rick risks his life to steal a van from Gaines and bring it back to the Bauers. They all pile into the van and speed away, but Gaines shoots out their tires and there is a gun war. Rick uses a machine gun he stole from Gaines at the same time he stole the van to help Jack. Jack tells Teri and Kim to start following the creek bed up to a water tower where a CTU helicopter will pick them up. He punctures the van's gas tank and shoots at it, causing the van to explode, but as they are running from the burning van into the woods, Rick is shot in the arm. Despite his injuries, Rick manages to follow Jack to the water tower, but Teri and Kim are not there. Jack tells Rick to wait in the water tower while he goes back to find the women.

As Teri and Kim wait in the brush and Jack has his final showdown with Ira Gaines, the CTU helicopter finally arrives. When Kim returns to the water tower to get Rick, she finds he has vanished. In fact, afraid of the repercussions of his part in the kidnapping, he ran to the highway and caught a public bus to get back to the city, bleeding arm and all.

After their ordeal at the compound, Teri and Kim are taken to a medical clinic and then to a CTU safehouse under guard. Once at the safehouse, Nina Myers begins questioning them and videotaping the interviews to try and get information from the girls about their kidnappers. While Nina is questioning Teri, Kim covertly grabs the cell phone that Nina left sitting on the kitchen counter and uses it to call the number Rick gave her the night before. Rick answers the phone and is very surprised to hear from Kim. She asks him if he is alright and tries to convince him to turn himself in, saying that since he helped them escape, the consequences he stands to face may not be as bad as he fears. Rick begs Kim not to say anything about him to CTU, but Kim tells him that her mother is already being questioned and that since they already know about his involvement, she can't lie about him being there. Rick then tells her to blame the whole thing on Dan and minimize his involvement as much as possible. Kim reluctantly agrees, as she wants to help protect Rick, who truly did help to save her life. Rick hangs up.

When it is Kim's turn to be interviewed by Nina, she responds to Nina's questions very vaguely, saying only that Rick helped them to escape and that she thought he was as scared of Dan as she and Janet were. Nina doesn't believe her, sensing that Kim has feelings for Rick.

As Nina continues to interview Teri, Kim again calls Rick, saying that Nina is pushing her hard and that she doesn't think she can cover for him much longer. Rick again tells her that if she reveals anything about him, he will go to prison. Before Kim can decide whether or not to tell anyone from CTU about Rick, the safehouse is attacked by assassins and Kim and Teri are forced to leave. During the course of their escape, Teri parks the car they are driving on a hidden embankment so she can check to see if they lost their pursuer. The car slips on the unstable ground and plunges into the ravine below, bursting into flames. The shock of seeing the car explode, presumably killing her daughter, causes Teri to pass out. When she wakes up, she is afflicted with amnesia, and she wanders off onto the highway. Shortly thereafter, we see that Kim is alive and was thrown from the car before it exploded. She climbs back up to the embankment, only to find her mother missing.

Kim makes her way to a pay phone, and calls CTU. Unable to speak to her father or Nina Myers, she refuses to give her location to Tony Almeida. Distrustful of anyone at CTU after the attack of the safehouse, Kim calls Rick again, threatening to call the police unless he lets her come over. She takes a cab to his house in Ecco Park, and meets Rick's girlfriend Melanie, who dislikes Kim on sight, Kim asks to go through Dan's things, hoping there will be some information about the people who are after her and her mom. She finds nothing and as she is about to leave the house, Rick noticed the nasty scrapes on her hands. Rick tells Kim how sorry he is that he got her into this situation and Kim responds that if Dan hadn't brought Rick into it, he would have found someone else who would not have helped save her life the way Rick did. Kim and Rick kiss. Just then, Dan's brother Frank busts in and refuses to let anybody leave the house until Dan returns with the money from Gaines. Frank plans to use the money to buy Ecstasy and then re-sell it, a plan that was formed before the kidnapping but without Rick's knowledge. Rick is too afraid to tell Frank that Dan is dead. Kim is desperate to get out of there, and argues with Rick and Melanie. During the argument, she blurts out that Dan isn't coming back. Frank overhears this and demands an explanation. Rick explains that Gaines killed Dan and never gave them the money. Frank comes up with a plan to rip off the sellers at gunpoint. All goes wrong when the drug dealer Frank holds up turns out to be an undercover cop. A shoot-out ensues and several of Dan's friends are killed. Dan, Melanie, Rick and Kim are all arrested.

At the police station, Rick tells Kim that she should tell the police about everything that happened that day so she can get out of the situation they are in. He tells her that it is time he faced up to his mistakes. Kim is taken to an interview room to talk to the arresting detective, ostensibly never to see Rick again.

Although Rick has been out of Kim's life for five years now, we are still holding out the probably vain hope that he will be re-introduced to the story. We would certainly love to see these two characters meet again and resolve their ill-fated yet intense relationship.
