About Palace Coup...
As a major supporting character in the first two seasons of 24, Mike Novick was once David Palmer's loyal right-hand man. Mike is a brilliant political mind who was always able to find a way to keep David's intense ethical and moral values from sabotaging his lofty political aspirations. As David Palmer's Chief of Staff, Mike displayed many admirable qualities, including quick thinking, vicious determination and a win-at-all costs mentality (without sacrificing Palmer's integrity).

However, Mike's vicious determination, grit, and committment to his beliefs (the qualities which made him such an effective Chief of Staff) once caused him to stray from his loyalty to David Palmer when he helped Vice President Jim Prescott organize a Palace Coup, in which the cabinet invoked the 25th Amendment and removed Palmer from office. He believed that David was making a gross error in judgement by delaying a military response to the nuclear detonation on US soil. Although Mike made this decision based on his own moral beliefs in what was right, David was unable to forgive Mike's betrayal of their 20 year friendship and Mike left the Palmer Administration in regret and disgrace.

Despite Mike's poor judgement, he remained a passionate, committed and gritty character who was never afraid to get down in the trenches and dig in to resolve whatever massive crisis happened to be impending. When Palmer chose to remove him from his post, Mike did not protest or try to exact revenge. He humbly accepted Palmer's decision and acknowledged his mistake with all the class and grace we had come to expect from him. For this, he deserves his own fanlisting.

Palace Coup is designed and maintained by Kasia Gawlak and Matt McCormack, creators of Almeida Is God.

The History of Mike Novick...

We first meet Mike Novick during Senator David Palmer's presidential campaign, as he is awoken in the early morning hours on the day of the California Presidential Primary, only to learn that a respected journalist, Maureen Kingsley, intends to release a story accusing Palmer's son Keith of murdering the man who raped his sister 7 years ago. At first Palmer is convinced that he should withdraw from the race rather than put his family through the ordeal of facing these accusations, but Mike assures him that if he handles things right, he will still be able to win. He tells David his only choice is to go public with the story about Keith before Maureen does so they can tell their side, that the death of Lyle Gibson was an accident, but that Palmer himself knew nothing of the cover-up until just recently. They plan to do this at the breakfast event scheduled for 7 am at the San Clarita Power Plant.

However, due to the ensuing chaos over the thwarted assassination attempt at the Breakfast, Palmer is unable to go public with the story. Maureen is set to broadcast at 9 am, so Mike and David start working on a statement for after the story airs. Meanwhile, David's wife Sherry has convinced Maureen to hold off on the story, promising her an exclusive on the assassination attempt if she keeps quiet.

Throughout the next several hours, Mike and David learn that his campaign backers have carried out a threat to eliminate George Ferragamo, Keith Palmer's ex-psychiatrist and Maureen Kingsley's primary source. But they can't do anything about it because if an investigation into the fire at Ferragamo's office is opened, it will turn up evidence meant to frame Keith Palmer for the crime. However, Keith is able to obtain a micro-cassette recording of Carl Webb, the campaign backers' shady go-to guy, admitting to murdering Ferragamo and trying to frame him. Palmer presents this tape to Mike and Sherry, who both try to convince David to keep the story quiet and not rock the boat when they are so close to the end of the campaign. However, David is intent on following his conscience and the wishes of his son, and holds a press conference to inform the press of Ferragamo's murder, what led to it, and who is responsible. Sherry refuses to support David, but Mike is concerned only with how to spin it in a positive direction. Luckily, things work out for David and Mike as polls indicate the public approves of David's decision to come forward.

However the drama isn't over yet. When the second assassination attempt, a phone bomb, fails, Jack Bauer convinces Palmer to leak a story to the press that he was killed in the explosion. If the people behind the assassination find out it was a failure, Jack's daughter will be killed. Although, he supports whatever David decides, Mike agrees with Sherry that playing games with the public will hurt Palmer's campaign. Palmer doesn't care because he believes in protecting Jack's daughter. However, when Sherry leaks that David is still alive to the press, both Mike and David are furious. David storms into Sherry's room and confronts her with Mike close behind. Mike tries to calm David down, saying they need to talk to the press right away, but David literally throws Mike off of him. He throws a glass vase into the wall next to Sherry's head and storms out of the room. Later, Mike tells Sherry he agrees with her that David was hurting himself with the lie, but that she should make the first move and try to make things right between them. This is the last we see of Novick until season 2.

In season 2, Mike is now the President's Chief of Staff, as David Palmer has been elected President. After the US Government is alerted to a nuclear threat, Mike flies from Washington to the Operations Complex in Oregon to be by Palmer's side. By the time he arrives, Palmer already suspects Roger Stanton, the Director of the National Security Agency, of conspiring behind his back based on information he got from ex-wife Sherry. Palmer instructs Mike to shadow Stanton and find out if he's dirty. Mike is leery of suspecting Stanton based on information from Sherry, whom he doesn't trust, but agrees to see what he can find. Sherry uncovers evidence that Stanton could be responsible for various acts of impeding the investigation into the nuclear bomb, one piece of which was that Stanton had contact through a supposedly deactivated military network with a covert ops marine division that shot down a plane carrying Jack Bauer and a key witness.

Palmer worries that they need more concrete evidence against Stanton before taking legal action. Mike says they don't have time to follow the proper protocols and suggests that David take aggressive action of his own volition immediately because there is no time to waste. Stanton is taken into custody, but vehemently denies any involvement with the Coral Snake Commandos. Mike is the first one to suggest that David may be forced to go to lengths he might not consider under any other circumstances, meaning have Stanton tortured until he talks. David takes Mike's advice and has a secret service agent administer electro-shock to Stanton. Stanton resists torture for quite awhile, but when he finally can't take anymore, he reveals the location of the bomb.

After the bomb has been safely detonated in the Mojave Desert, a foreign intelligence agent delivers a computer hard drive found at the safehouse of the leader of the Second Wave terrorist conspiracy. The hard drive contains a recording implicating 3 Middle-Eastern governments in funding and assisting the Second Wave terrorists. CTU's best analysis seems to prove that the recording is authentic. This causes Palmer to prepare a military response, and this decision is completely supported by Mike. However, when Jack Bauer, one of David Palmer's most trusted allies, says he believes that the recording may be a forgery, Mike worries that Palmer's committment to military action may be wavering. Although Bauer cannot produce concrete proof yet, Palmer decides to call off the attack anyway because of his faith in Bauer's conviction. Mike thinks this is a massive mistake, and tries to convince the President to change his mind, but Palmer's mind is made up.

Shortly thereafter, Lynne Kresge, another of Palmer's top-level advisors, comes to Mike saying she heard a rumour that Vice President Jim Prescott is organizing a secret meeting of members of the cabinet behind Palmer's back. Mike says he will look into it. He tells Lynne he found a source at DoD who he is meeting right away. Lynne demands to be included in the meeting, since she was the one who brought Mike in on it in the first place. Mike and Lynne go up to a room on the 5th floor. Mike asks Lynne if she has heard of the 25th Amendment. Lynne explains that it gives the cabinet the power to remove the President from office. She is outraged that Prescott would even consider such a thing. Mike asks Lynne where she stands. Lynne says that although she doesn't agree with Palmer's decision, it was his decision to make. Shockingly, Mike says he was afraid she would feel that way. He locks Lynne in the room and has his "contact" guard the door. Lynne, like the rest of us, cannot believe Mike has betrayed David Palmer!!!

He returns to the floor and tells Prescott that he had to detain Lynne and they need to hurry. Prescott says he is working as fast as he can. He reminds Mike it is his job to make sure the cabinet votes to remove Palmer. Mike replies "it is my job to make sure the vote takes place, not to manipulate the outcome." Once Prescott has gathered the cabinet by videoconference, Mike tells David that people in his cabinet feel he is unfit to continue as President and they are waiting to meet with him in the conference room. Palmer enters the room and after Prescott explains his position, everyone gets set for "The Trial of David Palmer."

Prescott brings in Ron Weiland, a reporter Palmer detained earlier in the day, and Roger Stanton to testify. Stanton denies any involvement in the nuclear conspiracy and when the videotape of his interrogation is shown, the part where he confesses that the bomb was at Norton Airfield is missing. Palmer turns to Mike, imploring him to tell the truth about Stanton. In probably the single most despicable act of his life, Mike evades the issue and simply responds "I only know what the President told me. I wasn't in the room." Even though Mike knows Stanton is lying, he also knows that if he supports Palmer's account, it could weaken Prescott's case, and in order for the military action to continue, Palmer must be removed. Mike tries one last time to convince Palmer to authorize the attack so he can keep his presidency. He says he is on his side, but that Palmer is making a huge mistake. Palmer refuses. After everyone has said their piece, the cabinet votes 8-7 to remove Palmer from office. Palmer is escorted by Secret Service Agent Aaron Pierce to a room where he is to stay isolated until Prescott's ascension to the office becomes public. Mike goes in to request his access codes, which he says belong to "President Prescott" now. Palmer is disgusted.

Mike goes about assisting Prescott with plans for the military strike, while Palmer convinces Aaron Pierce, his loyal ally, to disobey policy and get him a STATphone. Pierce does. Palmer speaks with Bauer to find out that he has the man who engineered the Cyprus recording in custody. Mike discovers the missing phone, and arrests Pierce. During the ensuing confrontation, Palmer tells Mike that it was Aaron who stepped up and put himself on the line when it should have been Mike. Mike looks embarrassed and ashamed, and leaves the room in silent disgrace.

Shortly thereafter, Palmer's lawyer, Brian Jacobs arrives. He approaches Mike and says that he needs access to a research terminal to find out information about Peter Kingsley. At first Mike is unreceptive, but Jacobs reminds him that the 20 years he's spent with Palmer is a lot of history just to throw out the window, and that Palmer at least deserves a chance to prove his case. This gets to Mike, so he allows Jacobs access to a research terminal that can look up files, but not transmit any outgoing messages.

45 minutes later Jacobs comes back to Mike saying he has found links and phone records between Peter Kingsley, the man Jack Bauer suspects of being behind the bomb, and Jonathan Wallace, the Coral Snake Commando who killed his own men to prevent them from intercepting the bomb. Mike realizes that this could prove Jack Bauer was right. He calls CTU and orders Ryan Chappelle to help Jack Bauer. Jack informs CTU that he and Sherry Palmer have arranged a meeting with Kingsley, where Sherry will wear a wire. Mike tells Prescott about the sting operation. Prescott warns that the bombers will start dropping bombs in less than 15 minutes. Mike says the meeting will take place any minute. Prescott agrees to listen to the evidence. Mike informs Palmer of the sting op and of Sherry's involvement. Palmer is stunned. As the sting op proceeds, Sherry Palmer gets Peter Kingsley to admit that he hired Alex Hewitt to forge the Cyprus recording. Precott is stunned, but he orders the military to abort the attack.

After the dust has settled, Prescott informs Palmer that he will be immediately re-instated to the Presidency and that he, as well as the cabinet members who voted against Palmer, will resign. Palmer says that won't be necessary, that everyone was stressed and confused and they need to rebuild trust. Mike is astounded as Palmer's loyal and forgiving frame of mind. When the videoconference ends, Palmer thanks Mike for coming through for him in the eleventh hour, but says that he needed someone who would stand by him til the end, and relieves Mike of his post. Mike is obviously crushed by this, but he humbly accepts his fate and the consequences of his actions, and simply responds "Yes, Mr. President."
