About Heels of Steel ...

24 has always been a haven for strong, interesting and unique female characters, and Lynne is no exception. Unafraid to go up against the "good old boys" of American politics to stand up for her own moral conscience, and willing to go to any lengths necessary to protect David Palmer, Lynne is tough as nails but nonetheless looks GREAT in those classy, fashionable high heels she likes to wear.

A Brief History of Lynne
...
We first meet Lynne in the opening episode of Season 2. She, along with the rest of President David Palmer's high-level staff, are stationed at an Operations Complex in Oregon. Next to Mike Novick, Palmer's Chief of Staff, Lynne is Palmer's closest and most trusted advisor. A serious terrorist threat has been levelled against the United States to detonate a nuclear bomb in Los Angeles.

Almost immediately, Lynne begins to butt heads with Eric Rayburn, the National Security Agency's liason. Rayburn feels that Palmer should immediately begin ramping up for a military response to the terrorist threat. Palmer, however, feels that military engagement should be delayed in order to devote all resources to finding the bomb before it goes off, and Lynne agrees with him.

The first step to finding the bomb involves CTU Agent Jack Bauer going undercover with a group of low-level domestic terrorists headed up by an old contact, Joseph Wald. Intel suggests that Wald is definitively linked to the people behind the nuke. Bauer learns that Wald's group plans to bomb CTU Headquarters within the hour. He tries to contact Palmer to inform him, but the President is in the middle of a press conference and Lynne receives Jack's call. With Palmer out of contact, Lynne informs Rayburn of this development. Lynne wants to call CTU and warn them immediately, but Rayburn is adamant that if they do, Bauer's cover with Wald's group will be compromised. Lynne tries desperately to alert Palmer while he is with the press corps, but to no avail.

Mere minutes before the bomb in CTU is supposed to go off, Palmer returns to the OC. Rayburn warns Lynne that if she goes against him and tells Palmer about the bomb in CTU, she will live to regret it, but Lynne is unphased by Rayburn's threats. She immediately informs Palmer of the situation, and Palmer orders her to contact CTU. By the time she calls CTU, Tony Almeida and Michelle Dessler have already figured out what is going on and started evacuation procedures. Unfortunately, there is not enough time to get everyone out and when the bomb goes off, many CTU personnel are injured or killed. Lynne is angry at Rayburn and blames him for the deaths of agents. She accuses him of keeping her away from Palmer. Rayburn again warns her not to cross him or she will be sorry. Lynne looks at him with contempt.

About a half hour later, Palmer discovers that Lynne knew about the bomb in CTU for a full half hour before she informed him. Lynne explains how she tried desperately to get him a message while he was in a press conference. She says that in light of what happened, she has no excuse and offers to resign. Palmer will not hear of it. He says that despite his anger, he still trusts Lynne. He asks her if she told Eric Rayburn about the bomb. Lynne doesn't answer, but the expression on her face tells Palmer all he needs to know. He removes Rayburn from his post and arrests him post-haste.

Things are rolling along relatively smoothly for Lynne under the circumstances until Sherry Palmer, the President's ex-wife, arrives. Sherry claims she has evidence that people from within Palmer's own administration are working against him -- most specifically, Roger Stanton, the head of NSA. Lynne finds this very difficult to believe, as she's worked closely with Stanton in the past. She doesn't trust Sherry whatsoever and she thinks Palmer is making a mistake by bringing Sherry into the inner circle. Lynne, while remaining civil, makes no effort to hide her disdain or mistrust of Sherry.

Sherry, being Sherry, does her best to antagonize Lynne by reminding Lynne that she helped Palmer get where he is today and so deserves Lynne's respect. Lynne decides to take the high road and not take Sherry's bait. Shortly thereafter, Sherry and Mike Novick find hard evidence against Roger Stanton -- not only has Stanton been working against Palmer, but he also knew about the bomb in advance and failed to tell the President. Palmer has Stanton arrested and tortured for information. In the meantime, Lynne has started a little investigation of her own. Although Sherry claims she met Roger Stanton for the first time that day, Lynne uncovers a wealth of evidence that proves otherwise. She has records of e-mails, phone calls and face to face meetings between Sherry and Stanton going back at least three months.

Lynne takes this information to Mike Novick. Mike has a hard time believing that Sherry's involvement with Stanton could have anything to do with the nuclear bomb. Lynne tells Mike she has a meeting with her source to find out more offsite in fifteen minutes.

When Lynne arrives at the meeting place, instead of her source she finds Sherry waiting for her. Sherry tells Lynne that she has no idea how deep Roger Stanton's involvement goes, and that she should back off what doesn't concern her. Lynne responds by telling Sherry that she does not trust her. Lynne thinks Sherry has her own, and not Palmer's, best interests at heart. Lynne vows to do whatever it takes to protect Palmer -- even from his own ex-wife.

Meanwhile, Mike has uncovered a connection between Stanton and a Republican Senator that Sherry worked closely with in the past. Palmer instructs Mike to bring Sherry into the OC to follow up on this. Lynne and Mike are both nervous, knowing about Sherry and Stanton's secret connection. Lynne tries to explain, but Palmer doesn't want to hear it. He just wants Sherry in so she can get the job done. Lynne complies. As Lynne is showing Sherry into the secured area, Sherry again tries to bait Lynne. She says she knows Lynne doesn't like her, and accuses Lynne of trying to keep her out of Palmer's confidence because she doesn't trust her. Lynne finally loses her cool and asks Sherry where she gets off speaking to her this way. She tells Sherry straight out that she doesn't like and doesn't trust her. Sherry tells Lynne "finally, we're communicating." Lynne is furious.

It doesn't take long, however, before Sherry is the least of Lynne's concerns. After Stanton implicates Sherry in the nuclear threat, Palmer sends her away, despite Sherry's assertions that she was only involved with Stanton to expose his disloyalty to Palmer. In the meantime, the whole entourage has flown to Los Angeles to handle the aftermath of the nuclear detonation, and Lynne has gathered information that Vice President Jim Prescott has organized a secret meeting of the Cabinet. Lynne has no idea what it's about, because she was not invited to attend. Mike tells Lynne not to worry, that he will follow up on this.

Shortly thereafter, Mike comes to Lynne and says he has a meeting right away with an inside source named Yesper Isburg. Isburg supposedly has information about Prescott's secret meeting. Lynne and Mike both assume the meeting must be about Palmer's decision to call off military action against 3 middle eastern countries. Although a recording implicating these countries in the nuclear threat was discovered, Jack Bauer believes the recording to be a forgery and Palmer trusts Bauer's judgement. Prescott, among others in the administration, are decidedly unhappy about this. Lynne and Mike are certain this is the only thing Prescott could be organizing a secret meeting about. Lynne implores Mike to let her meet the source with him. Mike happily complies.

Lynne and Mike meet in a storage room on the 6th floor of CTU Division. Mike asks Lynne if she has ever heard of the 25th Amendment. Lynne iterates that it gives the Vice President and the Cabinet the power to remove the President from office if he is unfit for duty. Lynne is shocked to think that Prescott could even contemplate staging a palace coup. Mike asks Lynne where she stands. Lynne is firm in her conviction that although she did not agree with Palmer's decision to delay military action, she stands behind Palmer 100%. Lynne is shocked when Mike replies "I was afraid you'd say that, Lynne."

Just then, Isburg walks in. Mike instructs him not to let Lynne leave the room. Lynne is utterly shocked and disillusioned to learn that Mike is on Prescott's side. She implores him to reconsider, but Mike says he cannot allows the lives of tens of thousands of American soldiers be sacrificed to Palmer's indecision and faith in Jack Bauer. As he walks away, Isburg locks Lynne in the room.

After trying to reason with Isburg, unsuccessfully, Lynne begins searching the storage room for anything she can use to facilitate her escape. She is desperate to warn Palmer of Prescott's plan. She finds a blowtorch in a storage closet, and uses that to light some papers on fire in a garbage can. She holds the can up to the fire alarm, and the alarm goes off. When Isburg rushes in to check on her, she brains him with a fire extinguisher and runs. Unfortunately, Lynne did not hit Isburg hard enough to knock him out completely, and he gives chase. Lynne puts up a valiant effort, but the sexy high heels she's so fond of prove to be her demise when they slow down her progress as she runs down the stairs and Isburg catches her. They struggle, and in the ensuing struggle, Lynne falls over the railing of the stairwell and hits the ground 5 floors down with a sickening thud. She moans weakly, still alive, but barely.

Shortly thereafter, Palmer's Secret Service agent Aaron Pierce informs Palmer and Mike that Lynne has been found injured, having falling from a stairwell trying to escape a fire. Palmer and Mike rush out to the ambulence, just as paramedics are putting Lynne into it. Lynne's injuries have impaired her speech, and she is unable to communicate. Palmer holds her hand and asks her who did this to her. Weakly, she tries to point to Mike, but she in unable to speak. Mike sees this, and grabs her hand, saying "You'll be ok, Lynne. They'll take good care of you." Shame on you, Novick! Lynne, spent and frustrated, falls back weakly as she is loaded into the ambulence, never to be heard from again. We, the audience, are left to wonder whether she will survive her injuries, and if she will ever fully recover to her former spitfire heels of steel self.
