About The Long Road Home...
Throughout the progression of "24" as a series, the relationship
between Jack + Kim Bauer has been a tour de force, providing many of the show's
most
gutwrenching, emotional and authentic moments. Both of their personal journeys
throughout the series have been, in large part, a desperate effort to return
to
one
another and keep each other safe,
hence the name of this fanlisting.
This site is part of the Almeida Is God Fan Network. It is designed and maintained
by Kasia Gawlak, webmistress and co-creator of the popular 24 fansite AlmeidaIsGod.com.
A Brief History of Jack + Kim...
When we first meet these characters, although Kim loves her father immensely,
she has very little idea who he truly is or the kinds of horrors he's faced working
for the government. This all changes quickly when Kim and her mother, Teri, are
kidnapped by terrorists in an effort to undermine Jack's efforts, as an agent
of Los Angeles Counter Terrorist Unit, to prevent the assassination of David
Palmer, a high-profile presidential candidate. Throughout the rest of the day,
Jack risks everything - his career, his freedom and his life - to rescue his
family and bring them back to safety. Kim begins to realize what a committed,
brave and fearless person
her father is.
During the course of his rescue, Jack relied heavily on the support of two of
his closest associates from CTU, Nina Myers and Tony Almeida, to help him evade
capture and provide him with information. Kim and Teri follow Jack's lead, placing
their lives in the hands of Nina and Tony. This proves to be a tragic mistake,
when Nina is revealed as a traitor, who sold information and her relationship
with Jack to the highest bidder. In the course of her attempted escape, she murders
Teri.
Teri's death drives a wedge between Jack and Kim. Although intellectually, Kim
knows that Jack could not have prevented what happened, she can't help but blame
him for her mother's death. She finds it too difficult to move on from the loss
as long as Jack is a presence in her life, because she is constantly reminded
of her grief. This is very difficult for Jack. After the death of his wife, he
resigned from CTU, unable to continue working there with the reminder of Nina
and her crimes hanging over his head. Kim is all he feels he has left, and when
she won't see him, this only pushes the knife in deeper.
Jack is called back to CTU eighteen months after Teri's death when LA is threatened
by terrorists with a nuclear bomb. During the course of this day, Kim is dealing
with problems of her own. The family with which she is employed as an au pair
shows its true colours when the father turns out to be an abusive psycho who
beats his daughter and his wife, and Kim tries to take the little daughter away
from the family. Jack struggles to do his job and stop the bomb while trying
to ensure his daughter's safety. Even though it goes against agency regulations,
he tells Kim about the bomb and to
leave Los Angeles.
Although CTU finds the bomb before it is set to go off, the bad news is that
it cannot be defused. Jack volunteers to pilot a suicide mission into the Mojave
Desert so that the bomb can be detonated without any collateral damage. When
Jack tells Kim he won't be coming home from the mission, she realizes how much
time she's wasted being estranged from her father and how much she loves him.
Thankfully for Jack and Kim, Jack is able to parachute from the plane after George
Mason offers to take the plane in himself.
When Kim discovers that her father is indeed alive, she vows that everything
will be different from then on, and that the two of them will repair their damaged
relationship. She promises Jack she will come home and take care of him.
Three years later, Jack is still working for CTU, and so is Kim, now a mature
young woman. CTU can never go without a major crisis for long, and soon the Bauers
find themselves in the midst of a potentially lethal virus threat. During the
course of this threat, Kim proves she truly has inherited all of her father's
values and guts when she goes out into the field, and Jack realizes that his
daughter is a woman of will and her own mind. He has never been prouder and they
have never been closer.
Jack and Kim's relationship hasn't always been easy, but through it all, they
have both learned that all anyone really has in their lives is the people they
love. After everything they've been through, nothing will ever tear them apart
.
