About Incisive
Even when they were co-workers, friends and lovers, the relationship between Nina and Tony was incisive - meaning it was razor-sharp and cut to the core. There was never any comfort or stability in it, and there was constantly an undercurrent of desperation running through it. After Tony learned of Nina's betrayal - of Jack, of her country and of him - he truly despised Nina. No longer compelled to covet Tony's affections for her own selfish gain, Nina also despised him equally as fervently. They both think of each other as the lowest of the low - weak, inferior and to be pitied. Every interaction between them is about cutting in and ripping out some kind of unkind truth. During Tony's interrogation of Nina in season 3, she refers to him as "incisive", which basically speaks to their entire history together, hence the name of this fanlisting.

A Brief History of Nina and Tony
When we, the audience, first meet these characters, it is unclear how long they've known each other or how long they've been working together. It becomes evident very quickly that they are involved in a romantic relationship, even though Nina is Tony's boss at CTU. It is also obvious that Tony is jealous and insecure about his relationship with Nina because of a past affair she had with Jack Bauer, who is both of their boss, and the fact that she is so obviously still not over Jack. He has a difficult time reconciling his personal feelings for Nina with the fact that she is his boss. As a result, he is constantly questioning her motives, sneaking around trying to find out what she and Jack are doing behind his back, and generally giving Jack a hard time.

However, when Nina discovers that Jack's family has been kidnapped by terrorists in an effort to impede his investigation into an assassination threat against an African-American Presidential Candidate, she is forced to bring Tony into the loop and trust him to help her and Jack rescue Jack's family. Even though it is against protocol, Tony is willing to help Jack mostly because of his relationship with Nina and wanting to protect her interests. Between the two of them, they manage to give Jack enough leads and information for him to locate his kidnapped family and rescue them. Under pressure from his superiors to hang Jack and Nina out to dry, Tony instead stands by their actions. However, Tony makes it clear to Nina that he didn't do it for Jack, but rather for her.

For the rest of that day, Nina and Tony continue to work closely with Jack to bring down the Drazens and keep David Palmer out of harm's way. As events unfold, they are all convinced that the Drazens have an inside person working for them at CTU. Neither Tony nor Jack believed even for a moment that person could possibly be Nina, the woman they both cared for and trusted. However, in an act of desperation, Nina exposes her true loyalties and is revealed as a traitor. As Nina is hauled away in handcuffs, she shoots Tony a dismissive glance that tells him she never felt anything real for him and that their entire relationship was a lie so she could use him for information. He stands there shattered, wondering how the hell it all went wrong.

Tony and Nina do not meet again after this day for another 5 years. Although Nina has been involved in agency business prior to this time, Tony did not have a chance to confront her directly. This all changes when she is apprehended during a covert operation in Mexico, where she is hired to broker the purchase of a weaponized virus by unidentified employers. When the deal goes horribly wrong, Jack takes her into custody and brings her back to CTU LA. Jack is unable to interrogate her himself, as he has to answer to his superiors for his own actions earlier that day, so Tony is the one to do it. When he enters the room, the dripping contempt coming from both directions is palpable. Tony tries in vain to get Nina to answer his questions, but she is only interested in baiting him with memories of their history together and ridiculing his current marriage. Tony, however, has a few tactics of his own up his sleeve and does his best to get her to talk, including telling her that one of her business associates was HIV positive, a man she likely had sex with. Despite a reaction to this, Nina continues to refuse co-operation. Tony resorts to having a torture expert work on her with a brutal looking 6 inch needle. Seeing her only chance to escape, Nina attempts suicide by jamming her neck into the needle. She begins to bleed out and Tony tries desperately to keep her alive. While the medics are working on her, Tony leaves the room to inform Jack of her suicide attempt. Just then, the security alarm starts screeching, signalling that Nina has escaped. In the course of this escape, Nina winds up dead, having been shot in the head by Jack in the basement of CTU. In Jack's revenge, Tony gets a little taste of his own.

Tony and Nina are the two absolute polar opposites on this show - one is totally pure, totally selfless and completely benevolent, while the other is totally corrupt, totally selfish and inherently manipulative and malevolent. There is absolutely no concept of understanding each others' motives. These two hold nothing but contempt for each other, and rightly so. This contempt is what makes it so fantastic to watch them together on screen!
